Biosorption of copper (II) ions onto moringa oleifera pod waste

Biosorption of copper (II) ions onto moringa oleifera pod waste / Eza Edayu Zalazilah
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Biosorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by biosorbent prepared from Moringa oleifera pod waste has been studied. The biosorption capacity was investigated for two types of biosorbent, untreated biosorbent and base-treated biosorbent on the effect of different pH value, biosorbent dosage, contact time and initial Cu(II) ions concentration. The results have been presented and discussed in details. The equilibrium data for biosorption were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. From this study, the optimum pH for both biosorbents, untreated and base-treated biosorbent was observed at pH 6. It was revealed that the amount of metal uptake (q) decreased with increasing biosorbent dosage, maximum efficiency was achieved within 50 minutes and metal uptake increased with increasing initial Cu(II) ions concentration. The results also proved that pre-treatment of the biosorbent with NaOH showed higher biosorption capacity compared to the untreated biosorbent. The equilibrium data shows that the biosorption of Cu(II) ions using both biosorbents were best fitted with Langmuir isotherm model. The surface functional groups of the biosorbents were investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and the results revealed that the functional groups present on the biosorbent that are capable of adsorbing Cu(II) ions.
