Performance investigation of three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor using finite element method / Nadila Shafii
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Permanent magnet synchronous machines,(PMSM) are known as permanent magnet brushless machine have gained popularity in many industrial applications due to its low maintenance, high efficiency and high torque density. Due to its popularity, it is importance to investigate the influence of three magnetization patterns such as radial, parallel and ideal Halbach magnetization toward the performance of PMSM. Finiteelement software Opera-2D is used to model and predict the effect of magnetization patterns. First, the motor dimensions are calculated and the motor geometry is built in Opera-2D. Appropriate meshes are generated and boundary conditions are applied to the motor model. From the finite element analysis, the electromagnetic characteristic and performance of motors such as the air gap flux density, phase back-EMF, cogging torque, unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP), inductances of motor and electromagnetic (EM) torque are computed. The phase back-EMF is computed further into its harmonic components to investigate the total harmonic distortion in the phase back-EMF waveforms. After comparing the results, it is noted that PMSMs with ideal Halbach magnetization gives the best option due to low peak cogging torque, total harmonic distortion in the phase back- EMF, UMP and torque ripples. PMSM with ideal Halbach magnetization gives the highest motor efficiency with 98.86%, while the efficiency of PMSM with radial and parallel magnetization are approximately 93%.
