Performance analysis of single-phase induction motor for ceiling fan application

Performance analysis of single-phase induction motor for ceiling fan application / Syed Muhammad Zakwan Syed Salehhuddin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Due to tropical climate, ceiling fans are one of the main electric motor applications often used in Malaysia for cooling and ventilation purpose. Performance analysis should be implemented so that more improvement can be done on the ceiling fans. In this project, a ceiling fan motor is designed and modelled by using finite element method (FEM). The main focus in the design of the ceiling fan is the thickness of the air gap and the value of the capacitor. Experiments of DC-test, no-load test and blocked-rotor test on ceiling fan are also performed to identify the parameters of ceiling fan motor. All the experiments conducted were to measure and record the input voltage, input power, torque, and the phase difference between the input voltage, main and auxiliary currents of the motor. The steady-state AC analysis and rotational motion analysis on designed motor are implemented by FEM software i.e. OPERA 2D. The rotational motion analysis is done several times on different motor designs that have different air gap sizes and also on different values of the capacitor varied from 1uF, 1.5uF, 1.8uF, 2uF and 2.5uF. All information obtained from the results of experiments and analysis are compiled and analyzed. The larger the size of the air gap, the smaller the torque generated while the greater the input power required by the motor. For capacitance value difference, the greater the value of the capacitor, the greater the input power required. Designed motor with air-gap size of 0.15mm shows the best performances.
