Synthesis, characterization and catalytic oxidation of ce-doped tin oxide for ethanol oxidation

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic oxidation of ce-doped tin oxide for ethanol oxidation / Ekmal Harris Abdul Malek
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this report, Cerium doped SnO2 was synthesized by using impregnation method. Commercial SnO2 as a base, cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO3)3.6H2O) as a solute and ethanol as a solvent were mixed at room temperature combined and followed by a subsequent calcination process. The catalytic powder was synthesized by varying the composition of cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate. The products were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The catalytic powder was pelletized and tested the catalytic performance in a small scale packed bed reactor. The ethanol conversion was varied with different operating temperature, time take for ethanol to react and inlet ethanol concentration. The result showed that the 20 wt% Ce doped SnO2 exhibited high ethanol conversion, implying the potential application of the sensor for detecting ethanol.
