Disinfection of rainwater using solar energy, sodis / Mustaqim Mahamad
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This study attempts to investigate the solar disinfection (SODIS) treatment method in order to disinfect microbial pathogens exists in rainwater. Enteric pathogen such as E-coli is being focused to be disinfected through this method. Synthetic rainwater is prepared in this study by mixing the distilled water and wastewater that contains E-coli of more than 2419.6 MPN per 100ml and kaolin. Since, the rainwater has a low amount of E-coli, a 1:100 dilution of wastewater from oxidation pond and distilled water is used. While, kaolin is added to increase the turbidity of the samples to about 30 NTU by adding 1.5 g to a 20L sample. A Compound Parabolic Collecting Reactor (CPCR) is used in this SODIS treatment method. This advance technologies equipment has been proven to have a higher inactivation rate compare with the Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. However, this study has focused on the complete removal of E-coli rather than the inactivation rate. Hence, two operating factors are being considered that able to generate a complete removal of E-coli under sunlight radiation which is, the initial pH value and the flow rate of the sample in the CPCR. Initial pH used in the sample varied from pH 8 to 5 with the flow rate of 10 L/min to 20 L/min corresponds to their run which has been design using Design Expert software 6.0.6. Although, the removal percentage of E-coli exceed 99%, but both factors were found out not significant for the experiment due to higher intensity of sunlight radiation and water temperature rise above 50oC.
