ite-specific shear wave velocity investigations for geotechnical engineering applications using microtremor array measurement / Mohamad Zuhairi Ramli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In seismic engineering, shear wave velocity (Vs) is one of the most important parameter for the determination of earth’s geophysical properties and structural evaluation on the buildings with consideration of soil-structure effects (SSI). This study is focuses on the site classification of local soil and compare it with other invasive and non-invasive methods. Microtremor Array Measurement (MAM) (passive surface wave method) surveys are carried out at three different locations in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Engineering Campus in the determination shear wave velocity profile of the local soil in terms of average shear wave velocity at 30m depth. Seven difference array configuration of data acquisition based on MAM were carried out at these 3 location study. The MAM result shows that USM, Engineering Campus can be categorized into Class D (loose-to-medium cohesion less soil) according to Eurocode 8 and based on the IBC, the result shows the site categorized as Class E (soft soil). In addition, data acquisition from Multichannel Surface Wave Method (MASW) also were used as active surface wave method for these 3 location. The average Vs results from the MAM and MASW were compared in term of Vs profile with depth and frequency. Therefore, to optimize the benefits of the MAM result, the geological and geotechnical boring studies were utilized to combine these seismic data with the borehole information. The Vs based on standard penetration resistance, Nspt were evaluated by using an empirical correlation that was compiled from previous study after considering the region specific and site classify for all soil. The correlation indicated that the value of Vs was in ranging 200 m/s to 300 m/s and shows the contrast distribution at shallower depth.
