Projek ini membentangkan kajian mengenai potensi tenaga angin bagi penjanaan elektrik di Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia yang terletak di latitud 6 ˚ 25'U dan longitud 99 ˚ 45'T. Pulau Langkawi mempunyai penduduk kira-kira 92.7 ribu dengan pelancongan sebagai industri utama. Data angin telah diperolehi daripada Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia. Data yang digunakan untuk kajian ini adalah min kelajuan angin jam bagi tahun 2013. Data angin telah dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan fungsi taburan Weibull dan Rayleigh. Ia didapati bahawa Langkawi mempunyai kelajuan angin yang rendah hingga sederhana purata kira-kira 1.86 ms-1. Iklim Pulau Langkawi dipengaruhi oleh angin monsun timur laut (NE) dan barat daya (SW). Musim yang paling berangin adalah semasa tempoh monsun NE. Selain itu, kebanyakan angin adalah angin lazim dari arah NE dan E. Min ketumpatan kuasa angin (WPD) tahunan di rantau ini dianggarkan sekitar 24.05 Wm -2. Ketumpatan tenaga angin purata tahunan (WED) dianggarkan kira-kira 241.31 kWj manakala jumlah WED sepanjang tahun 2013 adalah 2914.68 kWj tahun-1. Tapak pengukuran jatuh di bawah Kelas 1 Klasifikasi Sistem Angin Antarabangsa. Keputusan menunjukkan bahawa grid-rangkaian diperoleh daripada sistem penjanaan turbin angin mungkin tidak boleh dilaksanakan di Pulau Langkawi. Namun, sistem turbin angin kecil adalah lebih sesuai dan lumayan di Pulau Langkawi. Di samping itu, turbin angin Honeywell WT6500 boleh menjadi model turbin angin yang sesuai dalam membangunkan sistem tenaga angin di Pulau Langkawi. ______________________________________________________________________________________ This project presents a study on wind energy potential for electricity generation in Langkawi Island, Malaysia located at latitude 6˚25’N and longitude 99˚45’E. Langkawi Island has a population of about 92.7 thousand with tourism as its major industry. The wind data was obtained from the Malaysian Meteorological Department. The data used for this study is mean hourly wind speed for the year 2013. The wind data were analysed statistically by using Weibull and Rayleigh distribution function. It is found that Langkawi has a low to moderate wind-speed that average about 1.86 ms-1. The climate of Langkawi Island is influenced by the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) monsoon seasons. The windiest season is during the period of NE monsoon season. Besides, most of the wind is the prevailing wind from the NE and E directions. Furthermore, the mean annual wind power density (WPD) in this region is estimate to be around 24.05 Wm-2. The annual mean wind energy density (WED) is estimated to be about 241.31 kWh while the total WED throughout year 2013 is 2914.68 kWh year-1. The measurement site falls under Class 1 of the International System Wind Classification. The results indicate that the grid-network sourced from wind turbine- generator system may not be feasible proposition in Langkawi Island. Still, a small-scale wind turbine system is much appropriate and bearable in Langkawi Island. In addition, Honeywell WT6500 wind turbine may be an appropriate wind turbine model in developing wind energy system in Langkawi Island.
