A feasibility study on stand-alone solar power sysyem for automatic gate in the car park of school of electrical and electronic engineering, usm / Toh Seng Nee
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The number of car park slots in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM is limited. Thus, the installation of an automatic boom gate is one of the suitable solutions to control the number of cars in the car park. To reduce the dependency on the main power supply, renewable energy is a solution. In this project, a stand-alone solar power system is designed to operate the automatic boom gate of the car park in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM. Solar energy is chosen in this project because it is clean, renewable, omnipresent, reliable, freely available, environment friendly, and domestically secure. In addition, our country is located in the equatorial region where the solar irradiance here is high, consistent over a period and is available almost every day. The methodology of this project includes survey methodology, data collection, data calculation, data analysis, and synthesis of all the specification required for the solar power system. It is recommended that the solar power system will consist of one piece of 30 W solar panel, a charge controller with current rating of 10 A and voltage rating of 24 V, 4 pieces of rechargeable batteries with rating of 12 V and 12 A·h and an automatic boom gate with 70 W, 24 VDC. The total cost of the system is approximately RM 6348.40. It is envisaged that by using solar energy, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM will provide an alternative power supply solution, be less dependent on the main power supply and contribute toward sustainability.
