Removal of heavy metals and E.coli from synthetic rainwater using laterite soil / Anbarasi Subramaniam
Tujuan kajian ini dijalankan adalah untuk mengkaji kebolehgunaan tanah laterite untuk menyingkir E.coli dan logam berat yang terdapat dalam air hujan. Penjerapan adalah salah satu kaedah untuk olahan pencemar daripada air hujan. Melalui, eksperimen ini, bahan semulajadi sebagai penjerap iaitu tanah laterite digunakan untuk penyingkiran E.coli, zink dan mangan dari air hujan sintetik. Di peringkat pertama, penyediaan tanah laterite dilakukan oleh kaedah pembasuhan tanah dengan air suling dengan menggunakan “floculator” yang kemudiannya dituras dan dikeringan pada 24 jam dengan suhu 105°C. Tanah yang dituras kemudiannya diayak melalui saiz 10mm dan saiz 0.063μm digunakan sebagai bahan penjerap. Pada peringkat yang kedua, air hujan tiruan telah disediakan dengan menggunakan air suling, logam berat dan air sisa dari kolam pengoksidaan yang mempunyai kandungan E.coli. Disebabkan air hujan mengandungi kandungan E.coli yang rendah, pencairan sebanyak 1:100, 1:250 dan 1:1000 telah digunakan mengikut data Design Expert 6.0.6 untuk mengetahui kandungan E.coli yang terdapat dalam setiap nisbah pencairan yang dinyatakan. Keputusan ANOVA menunjukkan bahawa penyingkiran optimum bagi zink, mangan dan E.coli adalah 98.12%, 96.58% dan 100% pada pH 6.98 dengan menggunakan 1.90g bahan penjerap, pada 27 minit dengan kepekatan zink 1.59mg/L, mangan 0.11mg/L manakala E.coli 531.27 MPN/100mL. Selepas pengoptimum kajian isotherma telah dijalankan tetapi ia tidak dapat diteruskan sebab nilai penyingiran bagi logam berat dan E.coli adalah tidak jitu. Berdasarkan kajian, penjerap semula jadi iaitu tanah laterite boleh dianggap sesuai untuk rawatan air hujan melalui proses penjerapan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The aim of this study was to investigate the usability of laterite soil to remove the E.coli and heavy metals found in harvested rainwater. Adsorption is one of the effective methods to treat pollutants from rainwater. In this study natural adsorbent, laterite soil was used for the removal of E.coli, zinc and manganese from synthetic rainwater. In the first stage, the laterite soil preparation is carried out by washing the soil with distilled water using flocculation. After that, it was filtered and dried for 24 hours at a temperature of 105 ° C in oven. The filtered laterite soil then sieved through starting with top sieve size of 10mm to obtain 0.063μm that was used as the adsorbent. At the second stage, synthetic rainwater had been prepared using distilled water, heavy metals and waste water from oxidation ponds which contain E.coli. Because of the rainwater contains low E.coli compared to waste water the dilution of 1: 100, 1: 250 and 1: 1000 was used according to the result of Design Expert 6.0.6. ANOVA analysis indicated that the optimum removal of zinc, manganese and E.coli are 98.12%, 96.58% and 100% at pH 6.98 using 1.90g adsorbent, 27 minute of contact time and the concentration of zinc 1.59mg/L, manganese 0.11mg/L, while E.coli 531.27 MPN/100mL. After the optimization, the isotherm study was carried out. However, the isotherm study graph for the heavy metals and E.coli could not be plotted due to the error of the data. Based on the study, natural adsorbents such as laterite soil can be regarded suitable for rainwater treatment through adsorption process.
