Besi dan mangan boleh dikeluarkan dari air bawah tanah melalui proses yang menggabungkan pengoksidaan dan penapisan, terutamanya apabila kepekatan logam ini adalah tinggi dan berubah-ubah. Kajian ini memberi tumpuan kepada keberkesanan alat pengudaraan lata dan saiz media penapis batu kapur untuk membuang besi dan mangan dari air bawah tanah. Sampel air yang digunakan untuk kajian ini diperolehi dari rumah anak yatim, Rumah Nur Kasih, Taiping. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) telah menyediakan sebuah telaga tiub 15 m dalam dan 150 mm garis pusat untuk rumah anak yatim tersebut. Walai bagaimanapun, air tersebut tidak boleh digunakan untuk kegunaan domestik kerana jumlah yang tinggi daripada besi dan mangan pada 6.48 dan 1.9 mg/L yang melebihi standard air minuman 0.3 dan 0.1 mg/L masing-masing. Menggunakan makmal model fizikal, kajian telah menunjukkan bahawa penyingkiran besi dan mangan telah mencapai 0.17 dan masing-masing 0.2 mg/L. Oleh itu, hasil kajian ini yang menggunakan alat pengudaraan lata dan penapis batu kapur boleh dilaksanakan di tapak untuk masyarakat menggunakan air tanah bagi tujuan domestik. Parameter yang di uji dalam kajian ini adalah besi, mangan dan oksigen terlarut di dalam sampel air selepas dan sebelum eksperimen dijalankan. Selepas melalui pengudaraan lata, sampel air akan di tapis menggunakan penapis “Roughing” yang berlainan saiz batu kapur sebagai media penapisan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Iron and manganese could be removed from groundwater by a process which combines oxidation and filtration, especially when the concentrations of these metals are high and variable. This study focused on the effectiveness of the cascade aerator and the size of the limestone filter media to remove iron and manganese from groundwater. Water samples used for this study were collected from orphanage home, Rumah Nur Kasih, Taiping. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has provided a tube well of 15 m depth and 150 mm diameter for the orphanage home. However, the water cannot be used for domestic consumption due to high amount of iron and manganese at 6.48 and 1.9 mg/L which exceeded the drinking water standard of 0.3 and 0.1 mg/L respectively. Using laboratory physical model, the study has shown that the removals of iron and manganese have achieved 0.17 and 0.2 mg/L respectively. Thus, the results from this study which utilize cascade aerator and limestone roughing filter could be implemented on site for the community to use the ground water for domestic purposes. The parameters tested in this study were iron, manganese and dissolved oxygen in water samples before and after the experiment. After the cascade aeration, water samples will be filtered using roughing filters with different sizes of limestone as filtration media.
