Removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater using adsorbent thin film

Removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater using adsorbent thin film / Noratasya Rosli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Heavy metal removal from wastewater is an environmental issue that is getting attention from public. Even though there are various ways of heavy metal removal from the wastewater, the cost is always a driving factor to encourage the search for a better and cheaper heavy metal removal method. In this search, the use of modified clay powder is chosen as an absorbent in the Lead and Zinc ions removal. The absorbent thin film prepared consists of Acid Activated Bentonite (AAB) as the main ingredient used for the removal of Pb 2+ and Zn2+ ions. In this study, the adsorption behavior of the thin film with respect to Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been investigated in order to consider its application to treat industrial wastewater. The experimental work conducted with various concentration of heavy metal from 20-60 mg/L of Pb2+ ions and 4-20 mg/L of Zn2+ ions. Parameters such as the different initial concentration of the heavy metal solution, pH, mixing rates and temperatures were studied. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption isotherm models were evaluated to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The Langmuir isotherm model was found more representative. The percentage removal of heavy metal decreases as the initial concentration of ion solution value was increased for both Pb2+ and Zn2+ were 90.33% and 98.35% respectively. The optimum pH for Pb2+ was pH 5.1 and Zn2+ were pH 4.76. The absorbent thin film was characterized by using the FTIR and SEM techniques. The finding discovered the adsorbent thin film hold great potential to remove cationic heavy metal species from industrial wastewater.
