Fabrication of screen-printed base ethanol sensor using mesoporous SnO2 synthesized via SnCl4 hydrolysis process

Fabrication of screen-printed base ethanol sensor using mesoporous SnO2 synthesized via SnCl4 hydrolysis process / Paveethra Bhai Murugan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The main objective of this project is to study the vapour sensing performance of tin oxide gas sensor fabricated through screen-printing method. Mesoporous SnO2 nanopowder was synthesized via a simple and mild SnCl4 hydrolysis process using cationic surfactant (cetyltrime thylammonium bromide, CTAB: CH3(CH2)15N+(CH3)3Br−) as structure directing agent and ammonia as an alkali source at room temperature, combined with a subsequent calcination process. The powder was synthesized by varying the aging times between 3 hours and 6 days. The synthesized SnO2 powder was characterized by X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). Mesoporous SnO2 nanopowder with narrow pore size and high surface area of 168.37 m2/g was obtained. Then, a gas sensor was fabricated from the as-prepared mesoporous SnO2 nanopowder through screen-printing method and used to test the response to different concentrations of ethanol at different operating temperatures. The results showed that the mesoporous SnO2 sensor with 6 days of aging time exhibited high sensitivity, good selectivity and quick response–recovery characteristics to ethanol, implying the potential application of the sensor for detecting ethanol. The optimum operating temperature for the sensor was 350°C. Besides that, there was significant variation in the sensitivity of the sensor when the concentration of ethanol is varied. As compared to commercial SnO2 nanopowder, synthesized SnO2 nanopowder showed higher sensitivity towards ethanol vapour.
