Communication system using GSM for non verbal and non-mobile syndromic children

Communication system using GSM for non verbal and non-mobile syndromic children / Kim Kek Keong
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ There is a variety of syndromes suffered by millions of individuals around the world. Each type is usually classified according to symptoms and signs apart from abnormal chromosome make-up. Syndromic children typically experience poor development of language and motor skills. The most common and overlapping difficulties faced are seizure episodes, non-mobility and non-verbal. Seizure attacks normally further down-grade an individual’s motor and verbal skills in various ways. Being non-mobile and non-verbal limits an individual’s desire to express his basic needs that may lead to stress and disappointment. There have been various communication devices such as speech generating devices and picture exchange communication systems developed for syndromic children. However, most of the communication devices are not suitable for children with poor gross- and fine-motor skills. This project aims to develop an enhanced communication device using the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) concept to help syndromic children express their thoughts, needs and wants so that everyone can understand them. With this device, parents can also receive children’s communication via SMS services using GSM system when they are not with their syndromic children. In addition, the system is also equipped with a database to record disabled children’s needs, emotions and thoughts. This project has been successfully developed and it is extremely useful in helping non-verbal and non-mobile children to communicate and get help when no one is nearby to attend their needs.
