Menurut pendekatan sejarah, sistem perlindungan kilat (LPS) telah bertujuan untuk melindungi struktur dan kandungannya terhadap pancaran kilat. Konsep asas LPS agak mudah, di mana ia terdiri daripada terminal udara, konduktor dan elektrod bumi, untuk menangkap kilat dan menyediakan laluan tenaga yang tinggi ke bumi. Tanpa laluan ke bumi yang ditetapkan, kilat boleh memilih untuk menggunakan mana-mana laluan yang bukan konduktor yang ada di rumah atau bangunan. Ini mungkin termasuk kabel telefon, talian elektrik, dan paip air atau gas. Kilat biasanya akan mengikuti satu atau lebih laluan ke tanah, kadang-kadang melompat ke udara melalui kilatan sampingan untuk mendapatkan pengalir pembumian yang terbaik. Pada masa kini, terdapat banyak teori dan penyelidikan yang mengkaji sistem pelindungan kilat dengan idea yang baru, untuk menghaliskan sistem perlindungan yang lebih baik. Justuru, tujuan projek ini dijalankan untuk mereka sistem perlindungan kilat berdasarkan kajian terdahulu, meliputi kasawasan komplek sukan USM Kampus Kejuruteraan termasuk padang bolak sepak. Daripada hasil analisis, untuk memastikan keseluruhan kawasan komplek sukan dilindungi daripada panahan kilat, sebanyak 22 lampu limpah bersama 4m terminal udara yang perlu dipasang di sekitar kawasan padang. Elektrod bumi memberikan kesan yang besar kepada prestasi sistem pembumian, dimana ia bergantung kepada rintangan bumi dan kerintangan tanah. Jadi, untuk mendapatkan system pembumian yang baik, panjang elektod bumi yang perlu dipasang adalah 2m. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ According to historical approach, the lightning protection system (LPS) has been intended to protect structures and contents against direct lightning flashes. The basic concept of LPS is quite simple, where it’s consist of air terminals, down conductor and earth electrode, to attract lightning strike and provide a pathway of high energy into the earth. Without a designated path to reach ground, a lightning strike may choose to instead utilize any conductor available inside a house or building. This may include the phone cable, electrical lines and the water or gas pipes. Lightning usually will follow one or more of these paths to ground, sometimes jumping through the air via a side flash to reach a better grounded conductor. Nowadays, there are many scientific and theories investigating the LPS with new ideas to help give a structure better protection. So, the purpose of this project is to design a LPS using conventional method, based on scientific theories, focussed on sport center USM Engineering Campus included football field and outdoor game courts. From the analysis that obtained, it is found that, to ensure all the area at the sport center protected from lightning strike, 22 floodlights are needed to install with 4m of the height of the air terminal. From this height, the total horizontal safety distance is 52.53m. The physical length of grounding electrode gives significant effects to the grounding system performances, where they depend on earth resistance and soil resistivity. So, in order to get the best performance of the grounding system, 2m length of grounding electrode is needed to install.
