Effect of shape of roof on wind pressure distribution using cfd / Adi Muhaimin Mohd Esa
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Recently there are numbers of records regarding damages of the roofing system, especially the rural houses in Malaysia due to windstorm. In order to prevent the loss of properties a study had been carried out. The objective of this study is to determine wind flow on the different shapes of roofing system of the rural houses at northern region of Peninsular Malaysia using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis. The types of roof that considered in this study are Gable roof, Hip roof and Dutch-Gable roof. All these types of roof were found in the wind damages location in the northern area of Peninsular Malaysia. The roof pitches for 10o, 15o, 20o, 25o, 30o, and 35o were analyzed. The turbulence model used in this study is the RNG-based k −ε turbulence which is derived using a rigorous statistical technique, called renormalization group theory, from the instantaneous Navier-Stokes equations. Result from the study showed that the Dutch-Gable roof with pitches of 20o produce the lowest suction force. From the results, it can be concluded that the existing roofing system need to be strengthened in order to resist the wind pressure. Unfortunately, the designer for roofing system in rural houses tends to neglect this factor. Hence, to avoid damages to the roofing system, a proper roofing system with appropriate roof type and roof pitch is produced in this study.
