Effect of sewage sludge ash as partial cement replacement on strength characteristics of concrete

Effect of sewage sludge ash as partial cement replacement on strength characteristics of concrete / Mohd Helmi Hassan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sewage sludge generated by the centralized sludge storage facility with 30 days storage capacity that provided to store the dewatered sludge in the event of interruption to disposal off site. This product can potentially be used as a mineral admixture for the concrete due to the silica content. This research work assesses the potential of SSA as mineral admixture for normal concrete. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) mix was proportioned to have 28 days compressive strength of 30 MPa, and SSA was used as partial cement replacement material at 10, 20 and 30 % replacement levels. The SSA was used to partially replace the OPC at the three different replacement levels on mass-for-mass basis. The potential of SSA as a mineral admixture for normal concrete was assessed through several tests; namely compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, compressive strength when concrete exposed to elevated temperature and UPV. The results generally indicate that concretes containing SSA exhibit lower strength and quality in comparison to the control concrete in particular at higher SSA content. It is believed that the SSA could enhance its potential as a mineral admixture in particular for concrete because the strength obtained for the lowest replacement was rather close with the control concrete.
