Effect of sodium bicarbonate on nutrient uptake and biomass production of Spirodela polyrrhiza

Effect of sodium bicarbonate on nutrient uptake and biomass production of Spirodela polyrrhiza / Chin Zhi Yan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Phytoremediation is a new technology for cleaning up contaminated soils, wastewater and groundwater. This approach is a natural biological treatment system which is ecologically friendly as well as cost effective. Nevertheless, phytoremediation takes a longer time to clean up a specific site, thus several studies on enhanced phytoremediation has been done in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency. In this study, enhanced phytoremediation of macrophytes using sodium bicarbonate enriched water is being investigated. The objectives of this study are to investigate nutrient uptake of nitrate and phosphate by S. polyrrhiza from Hoagland solution with sodium bicarbonate as well as to evaluate the effect of sodium bicarbonate addition on biomass production of S. polyrrhiza. The enhanced phytoremediation by S. polyrrhiza was conducted in a sterile condition for 14 days. Water samples were collected every two days in order to determine the nutrient uptake of S. polyrrhiza. The study showed encouraging results for enhanced phytoremediation specifically on phosphate nutrient uptake and increase in biomass. There was no changes in the overall nitrate concentration. Phosphate removal efficiency as high as 79.20% was achieved for the set with addition of 1.6 g/L sodium bicarbonate compared to control set of 11.67%. Enhanced phytoremediation also displayed affirmative results in biomass increment for the sets with sodium bicarbonate addition. For the set with addition of 1.6 g/L sodium bicarbonate, it achieved biomass increment as high as 120.39% compared to the control set of 88.33%. Therefore, this study implies that addition of sodium bicarbonate is able to enhance nutrient uptake and enhance growth of S. polyrrhiza as well as to be used in phytoremediation.
