The design and development of savonius turbine for science, technology, engineering & mathematics (stem) education / Nujjiya Abdul Mu’in
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Wind energy is one of the most common resources of renewable energy in the world that provides the lowest cost and very sustainable. In Malaysia, the wind energy is not widely implemented due to a very low wind speed with monthly average at around 1.8 m/s to 3 m/s. There is very limited initiative to implement the wind turbine applications through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education that can engage students in learning about the wind energy and sustainability. In this project, two models of a 2-bladed and 3-bladed Savonius turbines were designed and developed to generate electricity. This is a drag-driven vertical axis wind turbine with a model house as part of the STEM turbine kit was also fabricated and has the capability to display power by visual representation of LED light, sliding gate mechanism, and musical mechanism. The experimental study conducted in this project aims to investigate and analyze the effect of number of blades on turbine power performance. The performance was analysed in terms of coefficient of power (𝐢𝑝) and coefficient of torque (𝐢𝑑) with respect to the tip speed ratio (Ξ»). The 3-bladed Savonius turbine has demonstrated an increasing values coefficient of power in comparison to the 2-bladed where 3-bladed πΆπ‘π‘šπ‘Žπ‘₯ is 0.0035 at Ξ» =0.109. The coefficient of torque, 𝐢𝑑 has declined as the tip speed ratio increased due to the increment number of blades that eventually decrease the drag surface against the wind air that causes the reverse torque to decrease. It is also observed that the 3-bladed turbine generated the highest power output of 1.28W at speed of 38.8 m/s.
