Dalam kajian ini, keberkesanan campuran bentonit bersama kitosan sebagai bahan koagulasi untuk pengolahan air mentah telah dijalankan. Perkaitan terhadap bahan koagulasi konvensional yang berunsurkan aluminium telah menjadi isu dalam pemprosesan air. Kaedah pemprosesan air dengan menggunakan pendekatan semulajadi sebagai alternatif untuk mencapai koagulasi dipertingkatkan, disamping dapat membantu mengurangkan risiko kesihatan dan persekitaran yang mesra alam. Sebuah kaedah untuk meminimunkan kekeruhan dari air mentah dilaksanakan dengan menambah koagulan primer seperti polimer semulajadi dari kitosan dan koagulan bantuan seperti tanah liat semulajadi bentonite untuk rawatan air mentah. Rangkaian ujikaji koagulasi dilakukan melalui ujian balang untuk mendapatkan dos optimum, pH, nisbah koagulan bantuan dan koagulan primer serta masa untuk ujian balang dengan menilai piawaian seperti kekeruhan, pH, aluminium, warna dan klorin. Dalam hal ini kitosan yang dicampur bentonite, menunjukkan hasil yang terbaik dengan nisbah 30:70 dalam kepekatan optimum sebanyak 1000mg/l iaitu berdasakan sukatan bentonite sebanyak 0.15g dan kitosan sebanyak 0.35g. Koagulasi dilakukan dalam kadar pH optimum 5 dalam masa 30 minit sepanjang proses flokulasi. Keadaan pH yang optimum telah menunjukkan peningkatan alkaliniti air dari pH 5 ke 6.8. Koagulasi dengan bentonite-kitosan telah berjaya mengurangkan tahap kekeruhan iaitu sebanyak 98%. Setelah air dirawat dalam keadaan yang optimum, hasil menunjukkan piawaian kualiti air adalah baik dengan nilai sebanyak 1.38NTU, 10TCU, 0.01mg/l jumlah klorin dan aluminium dan pH sebanyak 6.8. Namun, data menunjukkan hanya sedikit perbezaan kecekapan antara bahan koagulan semulajadi dan koagulan konvensional ___________________________________________________________________________________ In this study, the effectiveness of bentonite plus chitosan as a coagulant for raw water treatment was assessed. A possible link of Alzheimer’s disease with conventional aluminium based coagulants has become an issue in water treatment. A method for treating water using natural approach as alternate to achieve enhanced coagulation, might help to reduce risk in health and create environmental friendly. A method for removing turbidity from raw water, comprising adding a primary coagulant such as a natural polymer of chitosan and coagulant aid such as natural clay of bentonite to the raw water. A series of batch coagulation test was conducted by jar test to obtain the optimum dosage, pH, ratio of coagulant aid and primary coagulant and the efficiency time for jar test by evaluating the parameters standard such as turbidity, pH, colour, aluminium and chlorine. In terms of this parameter, chitosan : bentonite, showed the best result with ratio of 30:70 in optimal concentration of 1000mg/l with 0.15g chitosan plus 0.35g bentonite. The coagulants performed with optimal pH of 5 with 30 minutes of mixing time during flocculation. However the optimal pH condition during jar test has showed improvement of water alkalinity results from pH 5 to 6.8. Coagulation with bentonite-chitosan successfully removed the turbidity with highest efficiency of 98%. After water treatment in optimal condition, results shows great water quality standard with 1.38NTU, 10TCU, 0.01mg/l amount of chlorine and aluminium and pH of 6.8. However, data showed only slightly differences to the efficiency between natural coagulants and conventional coagulant.
