Fouling behaviour study of fish farm effluent treatment on ultrafiltration membrane

Fouling behaviour study of fish farm effluent treatment on ultrafiltration membrane / Sivasangary Ragupathy
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In membrane technology, membrane fouling is one of the major drawbacks. It causes flux declination. Thus, in this study, the fouling behavior of fish farm effluent treatment on ultrafiltration membrane was studied. The membrane used in this study was a self-synthesized hydrophilic membrane. The effect of different feed conditions, different feed flowrate (4L/min, 6L/min and 8L/min) and different feed pressure (0.4atm, 0.8atm, and 1.2atm) on the membrane performance and membrane fouling were studied. It was found that the flux was higher for pre-filter effluent by 0.31 L/m2.hr compared to effluent before pre-filtration. The permeate flux increased non-linearly with feed pressure which showed that fouling is dominating the flux profile. The fouling phenomena were further confirmed to be pore blocking especially at high operating pressure (1.2 bar). It was found the flux profile was the highest at optimum feed flowrate 6L/min and transmembrane pressure.
