Preparation of activated carbon from mangroves bark by physical activation with carbon dioxide and its evaluation on methylene blue adsorption / Surcharen Liew Chun Lee
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The production of activated carbon from the mangrove pile normally treated as a waste from construction site is the one of the environmentally friendly solution by convert waste to valuable product with high surface area. Thus, the main objective of the research was prepared the optimal activated carbon from mangrove pile via physical activation by using carbon dioxide. The carbonization process was carried out at 500oC for 1 h under nitrogen flow rate of 300ml/min. The char is further undergoing activation process at various activation temperature of 700 oC, 800 oC and 900 oC under different activation time of 1,2 and 3h. The effect of the preparation variable which were activation temperature and activation time to precursor on the activated carbon yield and adsorption capacity on the methylene blue dye were investigated. The optimal activated carbon was obtained at activation temperature of 800 oC and activation time of 1 h with BET surface area of 445.885m2/g. The experimental data of the adsorption is well described by Freundlich adsorption isotherm models with R2 value of 0.994 and the n value is greater than 1. The result of adsorption study showed that the activated carbon prepared from mangrove pile is suitable for methylene blue removal from aqueous solution.
