Preparation of edamame bean pod based activated carbon in methylene blue dye adsorption

Preparation of edamame bean pod based activated carbon in methylene blue dye adsorption / Khairunnisa Aina Mohd Kharuddin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Textile industry is one of the fastest growing industries and significantly contributes to the economic growth in Malaysia. However, the release of dyes into the environment during textile fiber dyeing and finishing processes is a main factor of water pollution. Dyes can cause harm to the aquatic ecosystem as well as to human being because of its carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. Adsorption process has become one of the most effective and comparable low-cost method for the decolourization of textile wastewater. The aim for this study is to prepare edamame bean pod based activated carbon (EBPAC) using microwave irradiation for adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Dye batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of initial dye concentration (25-300 mg/L) and contact time (0-24 hours). The optimized EBPAC production were obtained at radiation power of 471.57 W and contact time of 4 minutes. SEM image shows rough surface before the activation process and numerous numbers of pores formed after the activation step. High BET surface area, mesopores surface area, total pore volume and fixed carbon content found on EBPAC were 218.88 m2/g, 110.72 m2/g, 0.1894 cm3/g and 53.75 %, respectively. The isotherm study was found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model. The monolayer adsorption capacity for EBPAC was 118.31 mg/g. Pseudo-first-order model was found to be the best for the adsorption kinetic of MB by EBPAC. MB adsorption process by EBPAC was controlled by film diffusion mechanism.
