Numerical simulation of improved gully grate design / Muhammad Nur Falikh Shamsudin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is becoming common tools for engineering design and analysis. Project designs now involve the use of CFD techniques along with physical scale modelling to analyse the rapidly varied and turbulent complex flows that would not be easily analysed by physical modelling. In particular, there is an increase in the consideration and/or use of CFD modelling in the field of Hydraulic Engineering. In addition to being used to compare with other design techniques, CFD may become a standalone modelling technique in the design of hydraulic structures in the future. This research is aimed at using CFD models to validate the flow simulation over improved gully grate installed at Hydraulic Laboratory at School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package, Ansys-Fluent, was used for CFD modelling. This thesis discusses the process of CFD model development and its underlying theory. In this simulation, various test scenarios including the simulation of unsteady and steady states for two improved gully grate were considered to achieve the most accurate results. The different flow behaviour for two improved gully grate were been discussed in this study. Finally, by comparing the results of the CFD model with the results obtained from physical models, the velocity readings produced by numerical models are discussed through a validation process. The result showed that CFD models are capable of mapping the behaviour of both flow phases as they showed a close correlation to those achieved in the physical models. Although some slight differences in values have been found, the graphical trend for all test results remains reasonably similar.
