Electrocoagulation process for leachate treatment

Electrocoagulation process for leachate treatment / Munirah Atirah Mat Saad
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A real leachate sample, taken from Pulau Burung Landfill Site (PBLS) in Penang state, was used in order to investigate the efficiency of electrocoagulation (EC) process using iron electrodes as both cathodes and anodes to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, turbidity, and heavy metals of the sample. The effects of reaction time, pH and voltage on the efficiency of the leachate treatment were investigated. This treatment of the studied leachate was successfully removed color and turbidity about 94% and 96.78% respectively. Both maximum removal of color and turbidity were achieved at 3 V of voltage. Therefore, the optimum voltage for removal of color and turbidity was 3 V. The EC application also could successfully lower the high content of heavy metals inside the studied leachate namely Calcium and Magnesium by 92.6% and 82.6%, respectively. These maximum heavy metal removal percentages were achieved at 6 V of voltage and 30 minutes of reaction time.
