Kilat adalah salah satu daripada peristiwa alam semula jadi yang menangkap imaginasi rakyat dengan keganasan yang jelas dan kuasa pemusnah yang dikaitkan dengannya. Perlindungan perlu disediakan terutamanya di bangunan kerana kilat tidak dapat diduga dan boleh menyebabkan kematian serta-merta dan juga boleh merosakkan struktur. Sistem pembumian adalah bahagian yang sangat penting dalam bahagian kejuruteraan elektrik kerana ia berkait rapat dengan Sistem Perlindungan Kilat. Projek ini hanya menilai sistem pembumian bangunan yang sedia ada dan pemeriksaan terhadap keseluruhan elemen di dalam Sistem Perlindungan Kilat bagi Pusat Pengajian Kejuruteraan Elektrik dan Elektronik (PPKEE) dan Pusat Islam. Rintangan bumi untuk semua elektrod bumi adalah parameter yang dipilih untuk memastikan sistem pembumian dalam kedua-dua bangunan masih memenuhi kehendak spesifikasi dan piawaian seperti IEC 62305 dan NFPA 780 yang tidak boleh melebihi 10 Ω. Untuk kedua-dua bangunan. Rintangan bumi untuk beberapa titik elektrod bumi masih memenuhi keperluan standard dan beberapa elektrod bumi mempunyai nilai yang tidak diketahui yang tidak diterima. Pemeriksaan untuk bahagian luaran Sistem Perlindungan Kilat seperti sistem penamatan udara, turun konduktor dan penamatan sistem tanah dilakukan dan memberi cadangan untuk penyelenggaraan pada masa hadapan kepada Jabatan Pembangunan Kampus Kejuruteraan USM. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lightning is one of those natural disaster which catches people‟s imagination with its obvious violence and the destructive power attributed to it. Protection must be provided especially in the building because lightning is unpredictable and can cause death instantaneously and also damage to structures. Grounding or earthing system is a very important part of the portion of electrical engineering because it is correlated to the Lightning Protection System (LPS). In this project only evaluate the existing grounding building system and the inspection for an entire element in LPS for School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SEEE) and Islamic Centre. Earth resistance for all ground electrodes is the chosen parameter to ensure the grounding system in these two buildings still meet requirement of LPS specification and standards such as IEC 62305 and NFPA 780 which should not exceed 10 Ω. For both buildings, the earth resistance for some points of ground electrodes still meets the standard‟s requirement and some of ground electrodes are unknown values which is unaccepted. The inspection for the external LPS such as air termination system, down conductor and ground termination system is done and being suggestions and recommendations for future maintenance to the Development Department of USM Engineering Campus.
