Bagi tujuan pembayaran bil, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) memerlukan bacaan penggunaan tenaga elektrik dari para pengguna dalam bentuk bacaan kilowatt jam (kWj). Pada masa kini, syarikat daripada Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) telah membuat peranti baru dalam mengukur penggunaan tenaga elektrik di rumah dan juga di kilang dalam negara ini. Pada zaman sekarang, meter watt-jam jenis induksi telah digantikan dengan "digital meter watt-jam”. Meter jenis elektronik ini dapat dikenal pasti melalui paparan bacaan tenaga di panelnya. Walaupun sekarang meter elektromekanikal masih digunakan, namun pihak TNB secara beransur-ansur dan berperingkat sedang dalam proses untuk menggantikan meter lama kepada meter baru jenis digital. Semua meter tenaga TNB yang akan dipasang di premis telah dilaras dan diuji mengikut Piawaian Malaysia. Walaubagaimanapun, beban bukan linear menyebabkan pemanasan berlebihan kepada meter tenaga, pemuat dan pengubah. Kerugian yang tinggi berlaku akibat dari aliran tinggi yang datang dari sambungan kapasitor secara selari dalam beban. Kerugian ini tidak direkodkan dalam meter tenaga elektronik dan ianya akan menyebabkan kerugian kepada syarikat utiliti terutamanya bagi Tenaga Nasianol Berhad (TNB). Oleh itu, projek ini adalah untuk mengkaji kesan beban bukan linear kepada meter digital kWj fasa tunggal. Dengan projek ini, perbandingan di antara kesan beban linear dan beban bukan linear terhadap penggunaan meter tenaga kWj telahpun djalankan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ For billing purposes, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) requires energy consumption from the user for reading measured in kilowatt hour (kWh). Nowadays, the company of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) have been made a new device in measuring the electric energy consumption at homes and industries national. Nowadays, the induction watt-hour meter had been replaced with “digital watt-hour meter”. Electronic meters are identifiable through the LCD display panels. Whilst electromechanical meters are still in use, TNB is gradually phasing them out through replacement programs. All TNB energy meters installed at the premises have been calibrated and tested in accordance to Malaysian Standards. However, the non-linear loads cause excessive heating to the energy meter, capacitance and transformer. The high loss occurs due to the high current flow which comes from parallel capacitors in the loads. This loss is not recorded in the electronic energy meter and it cause loss to utility company especially for Tenaga Nasianol Berhad (TNB). So, this project is about to investigate the effect of non-linear load to the Single-Phase Digital kWh Meters. By this project, the comparison between the effect of linear loads and non-linear loads to the kWh usage have been made.
