Preparation of rice husk based activated carbon for the removal of malachite green and remazol brilliant violet 5r from aqueous solution

Preparation of rice husk based activated carbon for the removal of malachite green and remazol brilliant violet 5r from aqueous solution / Tay Lai Choo
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The adsorption of malachite green (MG) and remazol brilliant violet 5R (RBV5R) dyes onto rice husk based activated carbon (RHAC) was investigated in a batch process. Rice husk was used to prepare the RHAC through physiochemical activation which involves potassium hydroxide (KOH) impregnation and carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification. During the preparation of RHAC, the chemical impregnation, char:KOH ratio was set at 1:1; while the operating temperature was set at 850oC for 2 hours. RHAC was high in surface area (902.82m2/g) and pore volume (0.462cm3/g). The pore of RHAC was mesoporous type with average pore diameter of 2.41nm. The effect of initial dye concentration (100-500mg/L), contact time (0–24 hours) and solution temperature (30-60oC) were evaluated through batch adsorption test. The obtained equilibrium data for both dyes were best fitted by Langmuir model. Meanwhile, the kinetics data were best represented by the pseudo second-order model for MG and pseudo-first-order model for RBV5R.
