Behaviour and kinetics determination of e-waste pyrolysis process_Wong Lim Fong
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This paper is about the pyrolysis process of printed circuit board at three heating rates of 5, 15 and 20 K/min. Thermal gravimetric analyzer is utilized for the pyrolysis process. Thermal gravimetric curves obtained from the analysis is interpreted to examine the behaviour of the PCB pyrolysis process. The heating rates will affect the decomposition rate as the higher the heating rate, the faster the maximum rate of weight loss is achieved. However, in this paper, the variation in composition of PCB sample deviates the trend of the TG curves. The temperature range for rapid decomposition remains unaffected and similar range is recorded for all heating value at 550 K to 770 K. The composition of three samples are different at which the volatile compound and residue amount are non-similar. Higher organic content in sample for heating rate of 15 K/min contributes the largest weight loss to the sample. The volatile compound make up around 20-40 % of the PCB which will decompose when sufficient heat is supplied with high temperature. The moisture content remains consistent at less than 3 wt% from the total weight of sample. Properties of PCB is designed to be non-absorbing to protect the electronic components on it. Kinetic analysis is lastly carried out based on the TG and DTG plots. Coats and Redfern model is used to fit the data collected from TGA. Best fit model of reaction order with the best R squared value is chosen through trial and error. Zeroth order best fit Zone 1 meanwhile Zone 2 is between first and second order. Then, solving multiple linear regression will yield the value for activation energy and frequency factor. The activation energy is found to be 53.08-56.04 kJ/mol (Zone 1) and 34.52-53.56 kJ.mol (Zone 2). Moreover, pre-exponential factor is determined to be 1457-3077 min-1 (Zone 1) and much smaller in Zone 2, evaluated 43-1338 min-1.
