Activated carbon adsorbent from desiccated coconut residue for methylene blue dye removal

Activated carbon adsorbent from desiccated coconut residue for methylene blue dye removal / Nadzirah Shahrudin
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In textile industry, dyes are used for coloring textile material such as cotton and polyester. Dyeing process created water pollution by disposal of dye into water resources. Activated carbon adsorption is one of efficient method for the removal of dye. In this study, desiccated coconut residue based activated carbon (DCRAC) was prepared for methylene blue (MB) removal. The preparation of desiccated coconut residue activated carbon was prepared via through microwave irradiation with under flow of carbon dioxide (CO2). The optimum preparation conditions of radiation power and radiation time were determined for DCRAC at 440 watt and 4 minutes respectively which resulted MB dye removal of 84.02%. The optimized DCRAC has BET surface area, mesopore surface area, pore volume and fixed carbon content of 237.79 m2/g, 117.91 m2/g, 0.1019 cm3/g and 51.21% respectively. The effect of initial dye concentration (25-300 mg/L) and contact times (0-24 hours) were evaluated. Adsorption of MB on DCRAC was increased as the initial dye concentration and contact time increase. Freundlich isotherm model was the best fitted model for MB adsorption equilibrium while pseudo second-order was the best for kinetic data for MB dye adsorption onto DCRAC. The mechanism of the adsorption process was determined from the intraparticle diffusion model.
