Abstract This British Standard defines the classification system for shaped refractory products that are basic in composition (i.e. primarily containing basic oxides like MgO or CaO) and contain more than 7% carbon by weight. These products are primarily used in high-temperature industrial applications, especially where resistance to slag corrosion, thermal shock, and oxidation is critical — such as in steelmaking furnaces, ladles, and converters.
