Adsorption of lead (ii) ions from aqueous solution onto activated carbon prepared from mangrove wood

Adsorption of lead (ii) ions from aqueous solution onto activated carbon prepared from mangrove wood / Muhamad Syazwan Md Aris
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Activated carbon derived from mangrove wood was used as adsorbent for the removal of lead (II) ions from aqueous solution. 9 samples with different impregnation ratio and activation temperature was first tested and the best activated carbon by means the highest percentage of lead (II) ions removal was chosen to be used to study the effect of pH, initial concentration of lead (II) ions, contact time and initial adsorbent dosage on the adsorption of lead (II) ions onto mangrove wood activated carbon. Batch experiment was conducted to study these affecting parameters. It is found that the optimum pH for this experiment is pH 6 and optimum dosage is 0.5 g for 100 mL 100ppm lead (II) ions solution. Equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms model. Mangrove wood activated carbon was best fitted with Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacity of 9.5969 mg/g. The microstructure of the activated carbon was observed under scanning electron microscope. The textural analysis was done to study the specific surface area and pore size distribution. The surface area for AC900-2.0 is 418.55 m2/g with total pore volume of 0.2041 m3/g. Surface functional group was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, O-H stretching of hydroxy group, P-H group and some out of plane C-H group were found of the surface of AC900-2.0.
