Simulation of oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethylene using fluidized bed reactor by aspen plus v8.8 simulator

Simulation of oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethylene using fluidized bed reactor by aspen plus v8.8 simulator / Nurhamin Salwa Mohd Mustaffa
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ An oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a promising process to convert methane into ethylene. However it suffers from the relatively low selectivity of ethylene at high methane conversion. In this study, simulation software, Aspen Plus is applied to simulate the reaction, study the effect of operating conditions on the performance of the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reactor and optimization of the reaction. The simulation results obtained is acceptable since the error calculated for the product is less than 10%. Sensitivity analysis conducted shows that the conversion of methane and selectivity of ethylene were maximum at reactor temperature, pressure, methane-to oxygen feed ratio, and methane flow rate at 880 oC, 1 bar, 8 and 3500 kmol/hr respectively. The influences of key operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, methane-to oxygen feed ratio, and methane flow rate on the OCM reactor performance are further analysed. From the optimization, it shows that the maximum methane conversion and ethylene selectivity are 96.8% and 26% respectively. The reactions have been optimized at 887 oC, 1 bar, 3980 kmol/hr methane feed flow rate and methane to oxygen feed ratio of 9.
