The status of around pedestrian walk and air quality around school area / Nor Hazirah Roslan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This research focuses on the pedestrian facilities that were provided in the study area of SK Saujana Indah, Nibong Tebal, Penang. A survey questionnaire was distributed to investigate the perception of individual towards pedestrian facilities and air quality. The design and condition of sidewalk was considered to be poor by 70.1% of the respondents. More than 50% respondents consider air to be in poor condition. From previous studies it was found that air quality affect human particularly children and elderly. Moreover, this research is also intended to investigate one of air pollutant parameter which is particulate matter PM10 concentration at the surrounding of school area. The particulate monitor e-sampler was used to record the samples for three weeks period. Samples were collected continuously for 24 hours. All the data were analysed using statistical approach with aid of Microsoft Excel and Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS). This study also concentrated on comparing concentration PM10 during weekdays and weekend. It was found that the highest concentration of PM10 obtained was in the weekday of first week with 361 µg/m3 meanwhile at 344 µg/m3 at the weekend. Both values are more than the permitted value stated in Recommended Malaysian Air Quality Standard which is 150 µg/m3 for averaging time 24 hours.
