Strength and stiffness parameters of hardening soil model for kenny hill formation

Strength and stiffness parameters of hardening soil model for kenny hill formation / Hew Tau Yan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In recent decades, the capital state of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has been developing at a high rate. This has led to multiple constraints to the design of the structure, typically the space constraint and the traffic constraint. The soil constitutive model – Mohr Coulomb Model is also known as the most prevalent model among the practicing engineers, however, it is then further proven that a linear elastic and perfectly plastic Mohr Coulomb Model cannot represent the real soil behaviour adequately especially in the cases involving reduction of the mean effective stress or mobilization of shear strength such as excavation or tunneling project. This study was aimed to establish a database of design input parameters of Hardening Soil Model for Kenny Hill Formation. In this study, the real soil behaviour of soil in Kenny Hill Formation was used as reference soil to be compared with numerical simulated soil with Mohr Coulomb and Hardening Soil Model. The strength and stiffness parameters of soil in Kenny Hill Formation was then be calibrated to establish a range of design input parameters for Hardening Soil Model using numerical simulation by PLAXIS 2D software. It is found that the Hardening Soil Model able to represent the real soil behaviour more than the Mohr Coulomb Model. This is because of the feature of stress-dependent stiffness in Hardening Soil Model. However, the parameters of Hardening Soil Model are much more complicated than the simple linear elastic perfectly plastic Mohr Coulomb Model. Hardening Soil Model features a total of 10 parameters and it is very renowned due to stress-dependent stiffness. In the end of this study, the parameters of Hardening Soil Model of soil in Kenny Hill Formation were calibrated and a database is established.
