Effect of nitrite on the volatile fatty acid produciton through anaerobic treatment of palm oil mill effluent / Liew San Siang
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is one of the main source of pollution generated from Malaysia’s agro-industry. Its adverse effect to the environment is of concern and proper wastewater treatment of POME is thus prerequisite. Anaerobic treatment is a common method to treat POME. Although the method is economically feasible but it releases greenhouse gases. However, the intermediate product of anaerobic treatment is volatile fatty acid (VFA), which is beneficial as it can be used for biopolymer production by bacteria. The feed composition plays an important role on VFA production, while VFA determines the characteristic of biopolymer. Nonetheless, the inherent nutrient of POME has low nitrogen content which does not meet the optimum nutrient content for anaerobic treatment. Hence, it is proposed to utilise partial nitrified wastewater to increase the nitrogen content of POME. The presence of nitrite could be toxic to the microbial community. Thus, this research aims to study the effect of nitrite on the VFA production, in turn determining the suitability of increasing POME nitrogen content using partial nitrified wastewater. In this study, the composition of POME was varied by adding nitrite. To study the effect of nitrite on bioactivity of bacteria involved in the anaerobic treatment, 3 different concentration we studied, which are 50, 100, 200 mg-N/L and one control reactor. The results reveal that the nitrite in batches with 50, 100 and 200 mg-N/L nitrite concentration inhibits biomass growth in the process, which in turn leads to lower VFA production. The bioactivity of the biomass indicate possible denitrification of which compete with the VFA production, reducing the amount accumulated. The data shows that the addition of partial nitrified wastewater is not a suitable nitrogen source for POME.
