Application of Multichannel Analysis Of Surface Waves (MASW) for the determination of quaternary deposits soil stiffness / Wan Siti Rahmah Wan Abdullah
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This study presents the results of the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) in an open field area of the soft soil clay layer at 15m investigation depth. The MASW method relies on the measurement of active ambient vibrations generated by impact source hits to the ground or natural ambient wave like wind or moving car. The main attributes of these non-invasive methods are the cost effectiveness and time efficiency when compared to current in situ mechanical invasive methods. The study is carried out at USM Engineering Campus, Pulau Pinang. It discusses the influence of some acquisition parameters, such as the spacing of geophones, impact source generated and near offsets based on shear wave velocity results and does a comparative analysis of the results obtained with other geotechnical soil tests; seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) which carried out in the same place. Besides that, they were applied to infer the stiffness of the soft clay layers. The MASW result shows that USM Engineering Campus can be categorized into Class D according to Eurocode 8 and Class E from IBC guidelines. Although additional in situ and laboratory geotechnical tests, are necessary to obtain soil parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, moisture content, for example, for a complete characterization of the geotechnical properties of the investigated soil, the result shows that it is possible to use empirical correlations between the Vs profile, from the MASW method, and soil stiffness parameters in order to monitor areas susceptible to poor soil characteristics.
