BS EN 60669-1:1996 is a British Standard that specifies requirements and tests for domestic switches for alternating current (AC) only, with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A.
This standard applies to switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations, either indoors or outdoors. It covers the requirements for the construction, performance, and marking of switches, including their terminals and connecting devices.
The standard also provides guidance on the selection and installation of switches, including the appropriate wiring and earthing arrangements. It specifies tests to ensure that the switches are capable of performing their intended function safely and reliably.
BS EN 60669-1:1996 has been superseded by BS EN 60669-1:2019, which is the current version of the standard. The newer version includes updated requirements for the mechanical strength of switches and their components, as well as new tests for the resistance to moisture and heat.
