peralihan piksel (4) penajaman imej.
cara mengenali kategori imej sebelum memprosesnya.

Underwater images face challenging quality issues especially colour distortion because of
light scattering and light absorption in the water. Most images that are taken underwater do not have
sufficient illumination from the surface and it is costly and difficult to install underwater illumination
for photography purposes especially for casual photographers or divers. In some methods that are used
by professionals, the exact parameters at the site of photography are needed in order to process the
image. These methods normally can produce impressive results but such methods are complicated and
highly specific for a location where the images are taken. This project presents an image processing
method that is simple in comparative for underwater images to improve their quality. This project is
progressed in four stages, which are acquisition of raw underwater images, development of image
processing algorithm, testing the algorithm with sample images and finally comparison with state-ofthe-
art simple image processing methods. The program is executed using Visual Studio Express 2012
on a laptop. The steps of the image processing procedures are as follow: (1) finding the reference
value of each colour components of the image (2) defogging; (3) pixel distribution shifting colour
correction (4) sharpening. The results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to the results from
other state-of-the-art methods and tabulated. In the qualitative analysis, the suggested method works
well in slightly foggy images and foggy images but will over-decolourize images that are not foggy
and end up with resultant images that almost do not have any colour left for very foggy images.
Through the statistics obtained from the quantitative analysis that included absolute mean brightness
error, mean square error and peak signal-to-noise ratio, the suggested method outperforms the state-ofthe-
art methods that were compared to in all categories except slightly foggy image where histogram
equalization is better. The conclusion is the suggested method provides a simpler and better way of
enhancing underwater images compared to many state-of-the-art methods but the method only works
best in certain categories. Improvement that can be made is to include a method to differentiate photo
categories before processing.
