______________________________________________________________________________________ This thesis investigates the use of high-power light emitting diode (HPLED) illumination system for particle image velocimetry (PIV) as an alternative to traditional laser-based illumination system. Modern solid-state HPLED can provide averaged radiant power in excess of 20W. An illumination system with the use of 20W HPLEDs are developed with the custom-built drive circuit. The pulsing of the HPLED is generated by an audio generator. The illumination system developed is used to investigate three different types of flow which are non-uniform flow, flow across a rotating plate at high angle of attack and flow across and airfoil at high angle of attack. Images of each type of flow are acquired with the used of both laser-based and HPLEDs illumination system. The images are then analyzed using PIV View, computer correlation software and the results are compared. HPLEDs promise a few advantages in terms of cost, safety and performance. It has a high potential to be develop into an alternative for PIV in the near future
