Colloidal stability undeniably is a key parameter for any application of inorganic nanoparticles. Low colloidal stability typically results in the formation of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIOPs) agglomerate due to van der Waals and magnetic attraction experienced among them. This can be prevented by surface modification through introducing steric or electrostatic repulsion to stabilize the nanoparticles. The present study focuses on identifying the effect in colloidal stability of MIOPs from surface coating, mainly on the configuration of polyelectrolyte coated on the particles surface which are linear and branched. In this study, cationic polyelectrolytes, linear and branched Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) of same molecular weight were used as binding agents for surface coating. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) was employed to monitor flocculation kinetics of PEI-coated MIOPs. Moreover, UV-vis Spectrophotometer was utilized to investigate the sedimentation kinetics of linear and branched PEI-coated MIOPs with externally applied magnetic field and increased ionic strength of the dispersant medium by adding NaCl solution. The experimental results revealed that linear PEI-coated MIOPs possess better colloidal stability as linear PEI chains can align themselves on the surface of each nanoparticle while for branched PEI chains, it binds one of its sides to the surface of nanoparticles and with another side binds to another nanoparticles forming bridge flocculation.
