Verification of underground utilities at selected site in usm engineering campus by using ground penetrating radar (gpr)_Nor Atikah Yeop Sabar @ Sabaruddin_A9_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ The main propose of this project is to verify the existence of underground utilities at a selected site in USM Engineering Campus using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Other objectives of this project are to determine the condition, position and direction of the utilities, to produce an updated utility map of the area under study that shows the location of underground utilities used by other interested parties for monitoring and maintenance purposes and to understand the ability of using the GPR and their limitations. GPR, a relatively new geophysical technique, has more extensive sets of application. In this study, GPR was used to detect the underground utilities at the chosen site along Jalan Wawasan between the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering. GPR was run at the site area to detect existing utilities and a detail site survey was conducted. Softwares namely IDRISI Andes and AutoCAD were used to produce the final product which is the utility map. Detected utilities were electricity cables, water pipes and sewerage system. These utilities which include the information on depth and its location were incorporated with the survey plan that shows all details available at the site. Some of the limitations of GPR are also discussed and the final output is an updated utility plan of the site.
