The main goals to be achieved in this project is to understand the construction and operation of the PMSM as well as to develop a high performance vector –controlled drive system for PMSM in MATLAB/ Simulink environment. The process of implementation involves the design specifications, mathematical modeling of the drive and Simulink implementation of the drive system. A detail mathematical modeling of the drive for different drive components is presented. The steps of Simulink implementation are outlined in order to explain the process of converting mathematical models of drive into subsystems. The fast dynamic response of the drive system is shown in the simulation results with smooth transitions of speed from one steady state to another under the influence of instantaneous step changes in electromagnetic torque. The total harmonic distortion and harmonic spectrum of motor sinusoidal current waveform is being analyzed and is found to be less than 5% in compliance with the IEEE 519-1992 standards for harmonics in power system. The drive system can be further improved with the additional control strategies or different approaches for vector control of the PMSM in the future.
