Effects of taf-pack super modified binder on the engineering properties of porous asphalt / Yap See Choong
Malaysia merupakan sebuah negara tropika yang mempunyai keamatan hujan yang tinggi. Permukaan jalan raya Malaysia yang tidak telap air menimbulkan masalah seperti penyatahan air, percikan dan semburan, silau, rintangan gelincir dan refleksi lampu kenderaan. Oleh yang demikian, asfalt berliang diperkenal untuk membanteras masalah tersebut. Namun, asfalt berliang mempunyai hayat perkhidmatan yang amat terhad disebabkan oleh “stripping”, raveling”, penyumbatan liang dan muatan trafik yang berat. Hal yang demikian, kajian ini membentangkan kesan kemasukan TAF-PACK SUPER (TPS) ke dalam penggredan Jepun asfalt berliang terhadap ciri reologi dan ciri kejuruteraan. Bitumen gred 60/70 dan gred 80/100 digunakan dalam kajian ini. Ciri reologi bitumen campuran TPS dinilai melalui ujian penusukan, ujian cincin dan bebola, ujian takat kilat, ujian RV, ujian DSR dan ujian RTFO. Ujian makmal seperti ujian Cantabro, ujian “Rice”, ujian pengikat saliran dan ujian pekali kebolehtelapan dijalankan untuk menilai ciri kejuruteraan asfalt berliang campuran TPS. Berdasarkan keputusan analisis statistik, pengenalan TPS ke dalam bitumen lazim menunjukkan peningkatan yang ketara terhadap nilai suhu takat lembut dan nilai suhu takat kilat serta meningkatkan nilai penusukan, kelikatan, rintangan aluran dan keretakan terma. Asfalt berliang campuran TPS menunjukkan pengurangan yang ketara terhadap lompang udara, pekali kebolehtelapan, spesifikasi gravity dan kehilangan lelasan. Keputusan ujian Cantabro menunjukkan asfalt berliang campuran TPS berjaya mengurangkan kehilangan lelasan sebanyak 32.9% dan 50.5% untuk bitumen gred 60/70 dan 80/100. Oleh itu, pengenalan TPS memberi kesan peningkatan yang ketara terhadap ciri reologi bitumen and ciri kejuruteraan asfalt berliang. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Malaysia is a tropical country with relatively high rainfall intensity. Most of the Malaysian roads are impermeable which lead to pavement problems such as hydroplaning, splash and spray, glare, low skid resistance and headlight reflection. As a result, porous asphalt was introduced to minimize these problems. However, porous asphalt has a limited service life due to stripping, raveling, clogging and traffic loading. In this study, the effects of introducing TAF-PACK SUPER (TPS) into Japanese gradation porous asphalt on the binder rheological properties and engineering properties were investigated. Two types of conventional binder used were grade 60/70 and grade 80/100 bitumen. The rheological properties of TPS modified binder were evaluated through penetration, ring and ball, flash point, rotational viscometer (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and rolling thin film oven (RTFO) tests. Meanwhile, laboratory tests such as the Cantabro, binder drainage, Rice and permeability tests were carried out to evaluate their mixture properties. From statistical analysis, incorporation of TPS into conventional binder showed significant increase in the softening point and flash point as well as improved penetration, viscosity, stiffness, rutting resistance and thermal cracking. Porous mixes incorporating TPS showed significant reduction in air voids, coefficient of permeability, specific gravity and abrasion loss. The result of Cantabro test showed that the TPS modified porous mix reduces the abrasion loss by 32.9% and 50.5% for bitumen grades 60/70 and 80/100, respectively. Hence, the introduction of TPS additive gives significant improvement on both the binder rheological properties and engineering properties of porous asphalt mix.
