Design and synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles augmented microcapsule / Nordiana Abdul Rahman
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microcapsules with and without magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles by different solvents were prepared via phase inversion method. The main focus in this research was to synthesize PVDF microcapsules with different solvents and study the effect of different solvents which are dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) that used to soluble PVDF polymer on the polymorphism of PVDF microcapsules. Polymorphism of the synthesized PVDF microcapsules was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), porosity test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR). The results found that the dissolution of PVDF in different solvents had large influence on the microcapsule morphology and crystalline phase. DMAc and DMSO are among solvent that give high porosity to the PVDF microcapsules due to their miscibility or solubility parameter between solvent used in polymer solution and non-solvent containing in the coagulation bath. PVDF microcapsules synthesized by DMSO shows very nice sphericity due to their high viscosity of polymer solution. PVDF microcapsules synthesized from DMSO and DMAc occurred as a mixture of αlpha and βeta phases. Whereas, PVDF microcapsules synthesized using DMF and NMP as a solvent, only βeta phase were found.
