Cultivation of microalgae chlorella vulgaris using municipal wastewater

Cultivation of microalgae chlorella vulgaris using municipal wastewater / Woo Muan Hoy
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The present study evaluates the ability of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae strain to be utilized for biomass production and municipal wastewater treatment. Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated in the tertiary discharge of municipal wastewater in batch mode. The optimization of growth condition to maximize the biomass production were performed. Microalgae biomass of Chlorella vulgaris was then produce at the optimized condition: cultivation medium consisting of 4525 ml wastewater, 400 ml inoculum and 75 ml organic fertilizer nutrient solution adjusted to initial pH of 3 with aerated air supply flow rate of 2.2 L/min. Cultivation of the microalgae at optimized condition were also being put to use as bioremediation of municipal waste. The treatment analyses showed the nutrient removal efficiency of 71.32 % Nitrogen and 78.80 % Phosphorus which were remarkable. Biomass characterization of the biomass produced 14.64 % lipids mainly consisting of C16 fatty acids ( > 80 %). Hence, the biomass produced is feasible for biodiesel production.
