Preparation of activated carbon from mangrove pile leftover by using physicochemical method / Niranjanaa Naraiyanan Murthi
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mangrove pile leftover which found as solid wastes in the construction sites were used as precursors in preparing activated carbon. It is one of the best solution in transforming waste into valuable product. Hence, the main objective of this research was to prepare activated carbon from waste mangrove using two-step physicochemical activation method. The carbonization process was carried out at 500℃ for an hour under nitrogen flow of 250 ml/min followed by char impregnation ratios (1, 1.5, 2). After impregnation, the char proceed to activation process at three different temperatures (600℃, 700℃ and 800℃) for an hour. The effect of activation temperature and impregnation ratio of potassium hydroxide on the yield of activated carbon as well as the adsorption capacity on the methylene blue were studied. The highest yield of 30.12% was obtained from the activated carbon prepared at impregnation ratio 1 and activation temperature at 600℃. The optimal activated carbon was found at impregnation ratio 2 and at activation temperature 700℃, AC700(2) with adsorption capacity of 16.99 mg/g. The experimental data of methylene blue of the optimal activated carbon well fitted the Langmuir isotherm with correction coefficient, R2 of 0.9919, indicated that the adsorption of methylene blue is monolayer adsorption. The BET surface area, Langmuir surface area and the micropore volume of the optimal activated carbon were 582.72 m2/g, 787.534 m²/g and 0.22 cm3/g respectively. The results in this study showed that activated carbon prepared from the mangrove pile leftover was an attractive adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue.
