BS EN 60870-5-5:1996 is a British Standard that specifies the transmission protocols for telecontrol systems used in the monitoring and control of power systems. Specifically, it defines the transmission protocols for use in the communication between the control system and the remote terminal units (RTUs) or intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) that are used to monitor and control the power system.
The standard is part of the IEC 60870-5 series of standards, which are international standards for telecontrol systems. The BS EN 60870-5-5:1996 standard specifies the transmission protocols that are used to transfer information between the control system and the RTUs or IEDs. It defines the structure of the data transmitted, as well as the procedures for initiating, maintaining, and terminating communication.
The standard is used in a wide range of applications, including power transmission and distribution, oil and gas pipelines, water supply systems, and transportation systems. It is designed to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of these systems by providing a standardized communication protocol for the exchange of data between the control system and the remote devices.
