Friction reduction between piston and cylinder liner using ball bearings_Dinnesh Suntharam_A2_2014_NI
______________________________________________________________________________________ The purpose of this research is to reduce the friction between piston and cylinder liner by modifying the original piston. The piston is modified by making grooves at the piston skirt to mount ball bearings as friction reduction technique between piston skirt and cylinder liner. The design is analyzed under the operating condition of a piston of a four stroke single cylinder engine using Finite Element Analysis and also modification will be machined for the purpose of real testing. The clearance available between piston and cylinder wall is important to be taken account as well the deformation analysis due to its operating condition in designing the groove and ball bearing size selection. Ball bearing was chose as friction reducing tool because it is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the two surfaces, reduces friction, support radial and axial loads by transmitting the loads through the balls. When the ball bearings are rolling, they have a much lower coefficient of friction. With the finite element analysis software, a three-dimensional structural analysis has been carried out to analyze the modified piston design. Considering the thermal boundary condition, the stress and the deformation distribution conditions of the piston under the coupling effect of the thermal load and mechanical have been analyzed, thus providing a reference for working condition. At the same time the fatigue analysis of the piston were done to check the failure limit and to calculate the safety factor which was 1.85. Results show that, the main influences of the piston safety are the piston deformation and the high stress under operating condition and thermal condition is the main contributor to those factors.
