Design and development of a throwing machine for robocon 2013_Koay Boon Keong_E3_2013_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ The final task in the Robocon 2013 is the manual robot required to throw a bud to the “Moon” in order to achieve “THE GREEN PLANET”. However, it is difficult to rely on the manual operator to set up everything for a successful and perfect Bud throwing in the competition. The objective of this project is to design and build an automatic system which consists of object throwing machine and microcontroller that able to perform the throwing task. A lot of experimental tries and data must be collected and analyzed to design and build the suitable object throwing machine. First of all, a few design concepts of the machine are compared and the catapult design is selected. Next, the fabrication of the catapult machine and the bud are started. After that, the theoretical calculations are done to find out the energy required by the machine to throw the bud. A controller board that is working along with the microcontroller main board is designed and built to operate the machine. In addition, the machine is programmed to function automatically. In the end, the machine designs, controller board and program are tested based on their functionality. Moreover, several experiments are carried on the machine to test its throwing performances. Results showed that the throwing distance and height achieved by the single spring catapult machine is 2.229 m long and 1.117 m high. While, the dual springs catapult machine is able to throw the bud for a distance of 5.172 m and maximum height of 2.038 m. The dual spring machine built had the better performance and the results obtained were closer to the desired results. In conclusion, the objective of the project is achieved. An automatic system which consists of bud throwing machine and microcontroller is successfully built.
