Modification of pvdf membrane using plasma treatment for protein removal

Modification of pvdf membrane using plasma treatment for protein removal / Nur Ashikin Zulkifly
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has drawn much attention as a polymeric membrane material used in ultrafiltration (UF) process such as removal of protein due to its outstanding mechanical and physicochemical properties. However, current applications suffer from the low fouling resistance of the PVDF membrane due to the hydrophobic property of the membrane. This work describes the surface modification and characterization of PVDF membrane grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) using plasma treatment for protein removal. In this research, the grafting of PVDF membrane with PEGMA was done at different plasma grafting time and PEGMA concentration. Their effect on the properties change of PVDF membrane was examined. The results show that the addition of PEGMA with different plasma grafting time and PEGMA concentration could change the PVDF membrane physical (structure) and chemical (hydrophilicity) properties. The hydrophilicity of the surface of PVDF membrane was increases with increasing the plasma grafting time and PEGMA concentration due to the amphiphilic nature of PEGMA. However, longer irradiation time has caused pore broadening which lead to membrane pore blocking (fouling) and poor Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) rejection. The chemical composition and microstructure of the surface modified PEGylated PVDF membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle. Morphological structures of both neat and modified membranes were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pore size, hydrophilicity, water permeation flux, and antifouling property were also characterized respectively. The antifouling property of the modified PVDF membranes was evaluated according to the filtration test for BSA solution. All these results demonstrated that the surface modified PVDF membranes with PEGMA exhibited good hydrophilicity and fouling resistance.
